The last post for 2020

2020. What a year. So much has happened…so much also …didn’t happen. So this is going to be a bit of reflection of what happened in 2020 to me. The good. The bad. The sad. The happy. The whatever.

  1. Feb 2020: I finally fulfilled my dream of travelling to New Zealand for a trip! It was an awesome trip in which I caught up with my good friend living in Brisbane…we did a lot of hiking, horse riding, running, and also went on a boat trip! New Zealand is such a beautiful place and I would highly recommend it. I am also extremely lucky that I was able to go overseas before the borders to Australia has closed.
  2. March 2020: I finally saw my ALL time favourite band, ONE OK ROCK. Having missed out on seeing them when I was in Japan for exchange, I can finally say I have been to my second J-Rock concert. However, this time I actually knew and could sing a long with their songs! I also paid for the VIP tickets and also got to meet them, exchange a few words, and get my photo with them. The night was surreal and it was a great memory I will treasure for many years to come.
  3. Later in March 2020: The lockdown of Australia began as the Coronavirus made it way uninvited into all of our lives. You couldn’t escape it. No matter how hard you try to close your eyes….everyone was talking about it, the supermarket shelves were bare with no toilet paper or hand sanitiser to be seen. Gyms, pools, indoor/outdoor sports, cinemas, schools, universities, and shops, restaurants were closed for dine in. Social distancing was the new norm, everyday we were wiping all the surfaces we touched…everyday I would follow religiously the numbers, the tallies, the hotspots…what rules were changing…The hardest part of all was not being able to see my family and friends…I wasn’t able to see my nephew for the longest time and I was so worried he would forget who I was… It was also during this time that I began spending a lot more time with my family that still lived at home. Yes, we got on each others nerves at some stage…but because there was no where to go and nothing to do, we were just at home. My mum began planting and gardening more and more flowers, fruits, and vegetables…I began learning how to work out at home…For my brother and dad, nothing changed much for them…They usually just stay at home anyways. Skype calls were the best, and I am so grateful for technology that keeps us together, but nothing beats the ability to spend time in person with people.
  4. June 2020. The rules has started to relax in South Austraila. We were finally allowed to have up to 10 visitors in our homes! That meant we were able to gather as a family again and to eat out in restaurants with friends! This was the 1st birthday of my nephew…unfortunately because of the restrictions, my sister only invited the immediate family to celebrate….then they broadcasted it live to their other friends via zoom. My little nephew was sooo spoilt with soo many gifts from family and friends! He got Gucci branded shoes, a small ride on Mercedes, and sooo many toys. June was also the month that I found out that my full-time contract job was not going to be renewed…It was not entirely unexpected, but still a shock to hear it. It meant I had to job hunt all over again…and during a pandemic, that was depressing and a very stressful time…there was not much up for grabs in Adelaide in terms of Hospital Pharmacist positions, so I widened my applications to interstate hospitals. I had 3 sets of interviews for a position in Melbourne and that how I ended up where I am now!
  5. July 2020: I found out that I got the job in Melbourne and I would have to start planning my move…Where was I going to stay? Can I even go there during the pandemic? My aunty and uncle helped me immensely in looking for suitable places that I would inspect when I got there. I also had friends help me plan the trip to Melbourne and what I needed to do to make sure my car was okay. Then there was catchup after catchup with all the people I would be seeing for who knows how long? It was more like a one way trip at this stage…once I went to Melbourne, Adelaide would close it’s borders to me…they would see me as an outsider…I wasn’t sure when I would be able to see my family again…This was a really sad realisation and something that made me so anxious and sad. I would be heading to the city which was undergoing the second wave of Coronavirus…and was in stage 4 lockdown, a curfew, and mandatory masks everywhere. I was going into a virus striken city and working in one of their hospitals that have Covid- positive patients…as someone who hates germs, it was a big risk. Saying good bye to my family was the hardest thing, especially my sister whom I am closest with…I hadn’t cried at all at any of my other farewells, but saying goodbye to my sister for the last time was so hard.
  6. August 2020: I made the long ass drive with my car full of lugguage, toilet paper, and stuff to Melbourne. I was not welcomed with any police or officers at the borders, but it wasn’t the same the other way round. South Australia was quite strict with who was able to enter their state…Melbourne however, didn’t give a hoot and still doesn’t. After staying with my aunt for a few days, I found a place pretty quick and moved in on the same week. Then began the journey of living solo and managing to not live in a pigsty. I had to figure out what I needed and what I wanted…money didn’t grow on trees unfortunately… Then I started working at my new job and that was incredibly tough at first because of all the competency standards that I had to meet to prove I was worthy as a pharmacist.
  7. August-October: So basically nothing happened. I may have took Gamsat…but other than that I rarely went out. I think the lockdown was still ongoing, so there was no house visitors allowed and everything was Click and Collect or buy online. I think I did a lot of cooking…and buying stuff for my house. The video calls with my family and friends in Adelaide continued…We did group chats, group games, and I played ‘Amongst Us’ Once… lol…. I also did a seminar entirely online at home for work…that was interesting, but also made me extremely sleepy.
  8. Nov 2020: Somehow we managed to have 60 days free from Community Transmitted Covid- Cases! The city slowly opened up and restrictions eased in a gradual step by step process. Restaurants were finally open for dine in, but for limited numbers…Retail shops were allowed to open again! Gyms, schools, universities…and most importantly BADMINTON RESTARTED!!!! This is what I missed most (Asides from family and friends in Adelaide)!! Was the desire to hit a shuttlecock! I write this as my whole body hurts from a great baddy session yesterday night….
  9. Dec 2020: My sister messaged me and told she was coming to Melbourne and that we should catchup !! I was so excited!! I wasn’t sure if I was able to go back to Adelaide as they have stricter border than Melbourne, but if my sister could come and go back, surely I would be able to? In the heat of the moment I quickly looked up how much flights would be to Adelaide and back…and it was pretty reasonable! Then I remembered I have a whole bunch of Frequent Flyer Points which I was hoping to use to go to England (dreams crushed this year) and I used those points to pay for the return fare in its entirety! It also included checked baggage both ways! BONUS! I was so happy that I was able to come back home to Adelaide and spend Christmas with my family and to see some of my friends! It was a rushed 4 days…as I hadn’t booked any extra leave I was only there over the public holiday and weekend. Adelaide itself hadn’t changed much, but the people had changed…a bit. Since I left, a friend had a baby, another friend told me she is moving to Brisbane for a new job, two friends had broken up with the long-term partners, and I think that is it?
  10. Dec 31st 2020: The last day of the year 2020, I slept in! Because…I can :)! I had a day off today! It was an accrued day off that just happened to land on the last day of the year. Lucky me! I met up with my sister and her family for lunch and did a bit of window shopping in Melbourne city. A friend told me about a special Free parking voucher that could be displayed to park for free in Melbourne city…Then I came home, cooked the last meal of 2020, and did my last round of laundry for 2020…had my last shower, called my mum for the lastst time, emptied the trash for the laste time, and now I am typing the blog entry for 2020 on here. So many last times for everything. Oh, did I mention that the annual firework display for NYE has been cancelled for both Mellbourne and Adelaide? The Sydney famous ones are still going ahead, however they will not allow people to watch it from the shore. Also, sadly in the last few days we got a few cases of local transmission and now we have some restrictions reinposed, i.e. maximum 15 people in a house at one time…so the Family New Years Lunch is cancelled for tomorrow sadly…

    Happy New Year everyone! Let’s hope fingers crossed that 2021 will be a better one!! Stay Safe, Wash your hands, stay 1.5 metres a part, and wear your mask!

Stages of starting a new job

Night before first day: *Can’t sleep. Too excited/nervous/omfg. (Also can’t wait to start so you can start earning some $$ again )

First day. Wake up wayyyy tooo early. Sleep deprived. Wear a cake of make up and do your hair.. then you remembered you have to wear a mask.. and ruin face. Dress nicely in your freshly ironed clothes and clean polished shoes. Paid for expensive AF visitor parking for a short orientation. Get a mugshot of you taken as if you were a criminal on. your badge. Try to remember the names of all the people you met…then later realise u forgot to ask about how to use the staff carpark.

Week 2: You learnt from the first week that you don’t need to do makeup on your whole face. Just half will do. Clothes? They don’t need ironing right? They will become wrinkled anyways… you bond with the other newstarters.. only they seem to understand your pain and stress from being the “Noob” at work .;(.

Week 3: Let’s just do the eyebrows… everything else comes off anyways. They won’t notice if I wear the same thing twice in a week… right? At this stage you have made some friends, but also some enemies at work. Avoid those who hate in you and just remember it’s alright. You sort of know what you are doing.. kind of. You’ve made a bit of a routine at work. What snacks to get.. the free coffee and tomatoe soup. You got this :0

Covid Impulse Buying Restarted :(

I forgot about how much I spent the last time we were in lock-down back in Adelaide…

It just feels like the perfect past time…it’s stressful though…because the difference now is I am not working full-time yet and haven’t been for the last six weeks… I am basically living off paying the bills with my credit card. I put most of my money locked away in a long-term deposit -.-” or in high(ish) interest savings accounts that don’t allow you to withdraw or you lose the interest -.-”.

ANYWAYS. I keep rechecking my internet banking app to see if I have been paid my last salary from my part-time job…and hopefully *fingers* crossed I will also get paid out my annual leave which I rarely took.

So what purchases have I been purchasing?

A lot of things I probably don’t need.. :s..some I guess I need, but COULD make do and still survive without. I am just going to list what I have bought in the last week..

I spent a lot on homewares…bath towels, singlets, clothes airer, air fryer, kettle, 30 Litre bin (too much for one person), teatowels, clock, non-slip shower mat for inside the shower, mat for outside the shower… LOL so many mats. Also bought a mat for the entrance and for my bed. (LOL) …A santoku knife… microwave cover, sponges, wipes, disinfectants of every kind, toilet cleaner, paper towels. freezer bags x2 sizes, stainless steel mixer bowls x3, pegs (haven’t even opened it!), portable clothes steamer (used once), handheld vacuum (suction sucks), Telstra wifi-modem, Hair straightner for mum, AAA batteries, AA batteries, shampoo and conditioner (coz i didn’t bring them from Adelaide), body wash, TV cable, hand soap, dish dryer, sieve, mug, so many groceries fresh and frozen :(, filtered water jug, Laundry basket, Laundry washing bags, fabric softener, detergent for clothes and dishes, deodoriser, can opener (but I HAVE NO CANS), numerous amount of random plastic containers, Linkt Toll pass (Even tho i haven’t used any tolls yet), I’ve also started paying rent. Y_Y…

I bet that’s just half of where all my money went… T_T… Spending so much time alone at “home” and going out and doing things has made online shopping all the more tempting.. :(….if I wasn;t writing this post, I am very sure I would be online shopping again…

One slighlty (?) upside is that I remembered I have some Qantas Frequent Flyer points saved up! These points were supposed to be for my overseas “One day” to London trip…but that kind of looks out of the picture for the near future…So I used some of the points to purchase a ricecooker online…it’s something I can live without until it comes…

Things that I have found most useful since moving out

I can’t believe it has been one week already (almost typed one year) since I packed up all my stuff into my tiny little Toyota Yaris Hatchback and drove 12 hours over to another state in Australia. I have had to adapt and make do with what I have as best as I can. I am super grateful I have a credit card, as it allows me to make some large purchases without worrying about how I am going to pay for everything straight away.

Living alone is peaceful, but I have to admit it is a little lonely…I can spend days and hours without speaking to someone in real life. I have decided to compile a small list of things that I found most helpful when moving out.

  1. Get connected to WIFI. It helps give you peace of mind that when you video calls your family that you aren’t blowing all the credit on your mobile phone.
  2. Get a shower mat…it’s sooo cold going out of the shower at night!
  3. Get a pedal stool bin or automatically opening bin. You don’t know how better life is with a bin that closes and opens basically without you having to touch the lid. A swing-top bin is just NOT the same! It gets dirty easily and it won’t stop the odours from coming out of your bin! It’s just so convenient to have a pedal to open and close the bin, especially when cleaning out the sink or while cooking.
  4. Get some good sharp knives, they make your wrist and life so much easier! I just purchased my first knife today. Yup. It took only 29 years on earth to get this far…I had no idea that the cash register person had to double-check that I was over 18 before being able to purchase a knife! LOL. I got a Santoku knife, which is a type of knife really good for cutting things thinly and not having to rock back and forth. Who knew there was so many different types of knives out there with all sort of purposes?!
  5. Laundry baskets. Never appreciated them so much till now. Great place to store dirty smelly clothes.
  6. Kettles bring life. Makes coffee, tea, and instant soup…what else can I say?
  7. Hand held vacuums are the bomb. Easy storage..quick and easy. Makes vacuuming sort of fun and less of a chore.
  8. Paper towels are not just for wiping hands…they are for cleaning grease…lining draws..temporary placements… holding hot stuff. They are the best.
  9. Try to recycle everything that you can. Whether old bottles…cardboard boxes…containers..lids…rubber bands…they could come in handy someday.
  10. Be enviromentally friendly and also saving on the electricity bill at the same time! Try to heat up your house in other ways besides turning on the heater..i.e. exercising, cooking, or just wear more clothes so that you don’t feel so cold in your apartment. You could even make something warm to drink like soya milk or just drink hot water. Done.

 

Anyways, my brain hurts. I took a few montage style videos of my apartment block and the surrounding suburb today…I never knew HD camera setting on iphone is sooo nice! It makes me look like a semi-pro, even though I am noob. LOL once I figure how to to transfer to my laptop I might post it!

Being able to Eat out again

Don’t mean to brag or anything, but in South Australia, as I have mentioned before, things are almost back to normal. For the first time since forever, I dined in at an actual restaurant and had table service and all! The food was the best I have had this year, hands down. Maybe, it’s because all I have been having is takeaway and food court style foods…it’s the small things in life you didn’t know you will miss until it’s gone.

Shopping centres are open once again and it was filled to the brim with people. Sure, there was still reminders to social distance in the shops and on escalators. But it is hard to do when there is soo many people around. We still aren’t allowed to dine in at the food courts, so they have banned people from sitting on the tables and chairs, however there were groups of people sitting and eating on the floor….I think that’s even more unhygienic…but yeah.. lol… Who would imagined that Australians would be sitting on the floor of a food court eating?!?!

As there is still a limit to how many people can dine in at a restaurant, my friends and I put our name and number down at the restaurant we wanted to go to and walked around the shopping centre until they called us to say the table was ready.

Felt like a century ago since we were able to meet up, eat together, and shop together.

Super grateful.

Time of Adjustment

In my hometown, our level of social activities is ALMOST back to normal. There are some limitations to large gatherings still, however restaurants, pubs, cinemas, galleries, and sports centres are now open. I ventured into Chinatown for the first time in months today, and boy did it hit me how much I hated searching for a park, and walking past crowds of people. Are people still social distancing? Hell no. As much as they play over the loud speakers the reminders about social distancing, no one is paying attention and no one is even enforcing the rule.

It’s strange, I miss the quietness of the roads and streets…

Isn’t funny how you miss going out, when you can’t? But when you can go out, you don’t feel like it anymore. But anyways, at least people are able to go back to work and earn a living…

Life is a funny thing, isn’t it?

Well, I complain now,  but someday when border restrictions are lifted and we can fly overseas again, I’ll be a happy chap. Let’s hope I still feel like going when it does happen…

Recipe for Burnout

Covid is a great excuse to become burnout in my opinion. Asides from work, I usually make time to go to the gym around 3 times a week for classes and try to play badminton 1-2 times a week. I would visit my elderly Aunt and Uncle whenever I had time and also visit my sister and her baby whenever I could. Due to Covid restrictions, badminton, gym, and social outings were gone from the calendar and I didn’t visit my aunt and uncle as much because I could be a risk to them. Take away all the things I did out of work, it just left me with work..and more work. Oh yeah, also study… I am almost finishing my graduate certificate in disability studies…

If anything, I had to work more hours, longer days without break. So of course, I am not a great machine that can keep going and going. I stopped working. Literally. Couldn’t work, because I had become so sick. Sick of the unpaid overtime, sick of not being able to say no to an extra shift because I felt guilty, sick of looking after sick people. It’s a real thing.. this vicarious trauma…

Due to the stress at work, I was so exhausted when I got home, but I would still force myself to do some work out. Gone were all the things that I had preached on this blog and to others… Healthy Eating habits? I craved and gave into KFC every time the migraines came back…I have never spent so much money on SNACKS and they aren’t all healthy snacks either :(. I have been so busy at work, I don’t even drink enough water because that would mean having to go to the toilet!! I am just overeating snacks… and it’s terrible! I’ve also been splurging on things I don’t necessarily need with my new credit card.. Oh..what I have done.

Anyways, I am not writing all this JUST to complain about my situation, because I know we have it pretty good in Australia. It will get better, I hope, because the situation is ever changing! Just as fast as we were put into restrictions, the restrictions are being lifted faster than I imagined too. Life will become better soon. But until then..Just keep fighting on, because it can only get better from now.  Take time to look after your mental health, have you done something just for you today?

Maybe, it’s okay, that I am acting the way I am now…As long as I realise that I can’t stay like that forever! Now that I am aware, I will be more conscious when I go pass KFC or purchase something I REALLY do not need.

Got my first Credit Card

I finally got a credit card. Not because I need it for anything at the moment, just mainly to get points and to see what it’s like. I feel like this is another step towards adulthood or maybe not?…I am hoping to be able to personally get enough points to fly to London when Covid-19 blows over..!

 

Credit Cards have become a norm in the society that we live in today. With the lucrative offers of bonus frequent flyer points, free travel insurance, VIP lounge entries, and other incentives, it is almost like another form of gambling. If you pay off your debts in time, you are fine, but the temptation to spend more than you earn is always there and you pay a hefty price if you don’t pay your debt in time. This post will look into the benefits and cons of having a CREDIT CARD!

 

For those who have suddenly hit an unexpected emergency and are in needs of funds urgently, credit cards are a life-saver. It allows you to pay that debt or bill immediately and buys you some time before you have to pay it off. If you are good with money, you can use it a way to increase your cashflow as well as reap the many benefits of having the card. Other benefits including earning points on normal everyday purchases and which then can be exchanged for things like plane tickets or gift cards at supermarkets. Other lucrative benefits also include things like complimentary travel insurance, free lounge entries at airports, and other deals depending on the card you have. It basically enables people to purchase expensive items and pay it off over a longer period of time. For those who are struggling to make ends meet towards the end of a pay cycle, this is life saver to enable them to still be able to pay for rent, food, and other necessities before they get paid from their employers.

 

In saying that, the temptation to spend more than you earn has leads to many Australians into debt. By living beyond your means, you pay the hefty price of interest rates up to 20% for the amount that is owed. You could potentially end up losing a lot more money than you could save from having those points. This could lead to people turning instead to things like crime or theft in order to make a living. Financial crisis can also a very stressful thing to be in and is one of the causes for mental health breakdowns.

 

While credit cards may be great for some people who know how to manage their money, for others who do not have good self-control, it is a trap that is best avoided. Despite the huge number of tempting benefits of having a credit card, it is something that needs to be thought of carefully and not for those faint – hearted.

The Toilet Paper hunt continues

During my walks around the neighbourhood, I think I may have mentioned previously how there are people putting teddy bears or other soft toys in their front gardens for kids to find. I just realised that the supermarkets and shops are also doing the same for adults! Except, ours is the hunt for toilet paper! I kid you not, a facebook group set up for Health Care workers to adopt one another has turned into my latest source of information for where the sacred Toilet Paper is! So and so will post “St Peters Coles- Quilton 20 pack for $10”. Then a few hours later someone will comment “SOLD OUT-None left :(“. I am guilty of checking it just for that reason…It’s become a habit that everytime I enter a supermarket or shop that might sell toilet paper, I am always checking. Is something wrong with me?!?! I’ve had several dreams about finding toilet paper in a supermarket and being super happy.

The last time I saw toilet paper in the shop was three weeks ago when I woke up early to get to Coles at 6:45am for the early opening for health care workers. I kid you not, that felt like a dream come true! Almost as fond memory as when I met Taka from ONE OK ROCK.

Anyway, my hunt for this rare toilet paper continues!

How to help a Hoarder – Part One: Perishables

Happy Easter people! To those who celebrate and to those who do not. I do not, but I did go to work today. I am super guilty of relapsing in my old ways and working way too many days consecutively (again)..and it looks like my next day off won’t be till the 25th of April…which I HOPE IS NOT a public holiday..coz if it is..it means I’ll be working…and my next day off will be May.. !? ANYWAYS, that’s not the point of this post, the point of this post was to gather some tips on how to STOP hoarding. I think this is especially important during a pandemic, as the temptation is there…to hoard as much as you can! Even when you don’t need it at all and you have no space left in your fridge!!~ As a former (?) and daughter of two hoarders…I’ve thought of some ways that perhaps we can resist that temptation and just buy what we actually NEED and not Hoard. Coz hoarding is baaaddddd…

I am gonna seperate this into perishable (food/things with expiries) and non-perishable items (toilet paper). Today’s post will be about FOOD! The next post will be on non-perishables.

FOOD:

  • Buy what you need and try not to be tempted overbuy. 
    Will you actually finish that loaf of bread that is on sale? I mean, yes it looks so soft and fluffy to touch now…but like it won’t be that soft in a few days…it will get stale and hard :(. Unless you freeze it straight away… But isn’t your freezer already full of all the other stuff you have hoarded?!?!
  • Do a stocktake of what you already have at home!
    This is especially important if you have multiple people living at your home, who also go out and buy groceries. There is no point all three of you going out to buy milk, because if you do, you will end up having 3×2 Litres milk expiring in a few days plus another two bottles 1 Litre of soy milk, taking up like half of your fridge. This is what happened to my family…and the funny thing is, most of us are lactose intolerant ?! Before COVID, we usually at MOST have one bottle of milk, which often goes out of date… If you already have lots of fresh fruits in the fridge, don’t go and buy more…just eat what you already have….which brings me to my next related point.
  • Eat what you already have at home!
    If you followed the above step, you would have realised that you already have 10 cans of tuna that you bought last year! So you don’t need another 10! Eat those first before buying more…if you don’t, you will risk LOSING MONEY!!! No point buying more when you already have heaps. If something is really hard to eat (like a tastless nectarine!), try eating it with like yoghurt…icecream or something good xD….to reward yourself…don’t chuck it away if its still good (and healthy)!
  • You will save money and minimise food wastage.
    These points could have been enough to have their own dot point.BUT. Minimalisation is good?! Help stop food from being chucked into our bins, by buying only what you need and will actually eat! You will save a lot of money but using up what is in the fridge. Obviously, it is vital to check expiry dates and throw away mouldy things…But remember, there is a difference between “Best before ____” (which is a suggestion) and “USE BY ___ ” (throw it out now!!).
  • Give away what you know you won’t eat
    Whenever people give me chocolate or something too sweet, I bring it to work. While I don’t do that now (sharing germs is baddd), you can always give things in whole packets to people who you know will actually eat it. For example, my friend sent me some plum candies from Japan…Unfortunately, I am not a huge fan of plum candies…so I regifted the gift to my younger brother who has a massive sweet tooth and will literally eat anything given to him. When I mean regifted, I mean I knocked on his door, and without a word..just put it on his computer table, and left. LOL.
  • Grow your own vegetables and fruits!
    Well, my mum is an avid gardener as I have mentioned…and we have a lot of vegetables that we can eat from her garden…so she used to be like “OMG we need to go out and BUY MORE VEGETABLES”…now she is like “OMG WE NEED TO GO BUY MORE VEGETABLES…oh wait a minute, NAH we good…I’ll just go pick some”. I, sadly do not have a green thumb and have even managed to kill a small cactus that I got for my birthday one year..  ANYWAYS, since this coronavirus, I have decided I am going to try raise a small plant from a seedling.  Woolworths last year gave out free seedlings to people who spent over $30 in one purchase…it’s like the predicted this pandemic would happen! Anyways, I have a seedling for some Pansy flowers…sooo I have put it into my mum’s pot, that already has some succulents growing on it. ANYWAYS, wish me luck that I will remember to water it daily…and will it grow?! Who knows… 
  • Don’t buy in bulk coz it’s cheaper…especially if you know you won’t finish!
    For example, I know being lactose intolerant I can’t have a lot of dairy at once…so having a large tub of yoghurt is a nono :(. I will open it..eat a little and more often than not, I will forget about it and it separates and becomes all watery and gross. I know it costs more to buy those small little cartons of single-serve yogurt…but it really saves me money in the long run, because I actually know I will eat them..I crave yoghurt every now and then…but I want to eat one that isn’t separated and watery!These are all the tips I can think of now… if you have any other suggestions to help stop people hoarding food, please share in the comments below.. And Remember, there is no need to hoard food because there is not likely to be any shortages of food! Supermarkets remain open during this time, so just buy what you need and leave some for others!!!

Watch out for the next post about other items that don’t expire (I thin)~!! Like toilet paper, cosmetics..clothes!

Value Vs Quality

As I have started uni again last month…I realised I don’t actually have a stapler…or at least I can’t find my old one.. 😦 (A tiny stapler I got for free from some law expo my sister went to)..

So I went stapler shopping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can I mention how much I love the brand Kikki K?I have diaries, cards, pens and numerous other craft items that I have bought from this wonderful stationary shop. Would I love a Kikki. K stapler? Yes, probably… but the price was a hugggggggggeee turn off for me… 😦 $24.95 for a stapler… >.<” Maybe it’s because I haven’t been working as much I used to..but this is way more than I would pay for a stapler… especially since I only use it for university at the moment..! But it does look great…sturdy..

After being dismayed at the price of a Kikki. K stapler…I went to my second option…KMART! Well known for its cheap. yet still functioning goods. I found this stapler as shown below..for a measly……..TWO BUCKS!! I was like full, take my money! So cheap…On the outside it looks great…!img_0902.jpg

But when I used it I can indistinctly tell its very light and cheap…I don’t know how long it will last…but when tested…it still WORKED. It does the job and it cost 10 times less than what I would of paid for the kikki. K one.

What would you have decided?

Would you choose quality over quantity in this situation?? Or perhaps it depends what it is…

For me if it’s safety or health related issues, I tend to splurge a bit more…I like original brand names for my medications xD!! I also fork out money for health insurance, car insurance, and service my car with certified Toyota mechanics only o.O.

But yeah, for things like stationary, the cheaper the better usually! I got through a high amount of stationary and I am often losing pens and things…so it makes sense not to spend too much on then…I skimp out on food products too…Always looking for the cheap bargains in the supermarkets and waiting  (usually) for things to go on sale….

I don’t know if I made the right choice, getting the cheaper stapler, but so far its doing its job…

The Retrospective Perspective

Scenario One:

Ever saw an expensive nice business type of shirt and think to yourself…oh man…its so expensive..but it fits so well..and it looks so good. Let’s say this shirt costed $100. You buy the shirt. You love the shirt. In a year you wear it 100 times-its on your work clothes ? rotation cycle. So it essentially costed you $1 each time you wore it. It was worth it right? Since you wore it so many times.

 

Scenario Two:

You see a shirt that is on sale…its a casual shirt…its the last one on the clearance rack..you try it on..its a bit tight..but hey its only $10!! You buy the shirt.. you never wear it..because when you put it on again at home..you thought your stomach was too big… In a year you never wore it once. This cost you $10 and it was a waste of money.

 

Investments are so important, aren’t they? Anything of good quality and worth..unfortunately takes more money and time to acquire than the average cheap, low quality junk you can obtain easily…That is unless you got a really really good bargain/deal from a second hand shop or some super silly sale…

But yes, these days when I go shopping.. I am a bit more careful at what I decide to buy. I have decided that there is no point buying all these cheap clothes..for the sake of buying it because its cheap! I usually end up wearing it once …or it breaks/stains easily or it is easily worn out..due to the low quality. But, I have found …with the expensive items of clothing that I have invested in…I have used them so much…that I believe it was worth every dollar that I spent on it…especially those work clothes…! The great thing about formal clothes is that I can still wear them to church on Sundays and when going out…but those casual cheap clothes? I can’t wear them out unless I have a day off.. (which is soo rare for me) or if I am at home 😦 (where I am usually in my pjs anyways)…

So have a think, the next time you purchase something…is it worth it? Should I get 10 low quality items that I will never use/or have to replace coz it broke or should I invest that money and get a longer lasting and more quality product?

Worth a giving it a thought…
