Having multiple job Interviews and offers

Whenever I am looking for a job, I don’t just apply for one job, I go far and wide… in the hopes of getting something and hopefully getting to choose. I mean you sort of don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket and hope for the best…We are humans 😦 We have to work for money when we are young so we can retire young and with enough income, (more on that in another post).

So what happens when you get multiple offers of interviews and during your job search you get offered a position? Depending on the company, some give you plenty of time to think about accepting, while some need the answer ASAP, because they need someone to work NOW.

I don’t think there is ever a right or wrong answer to this question. Sometimes, the job that you got an offer for would make you so depressed and sad…so much that you regret not considering the other options that were on offer… However, we have to factor in different aspects, is it contract? Full-time or part-time? Casual? What are my future career prospects? You can’t figure all that out from a job interview…you have to experience and get into the job, learn the ropes, and know the people to make that decision.

Like I said yesterday, high risk means higher returns right?

I had to reject a job interview today, but I thought about it long and hard before writing the rejection email. Would I have gone for the interview if I hadn’t already had a job offer? Absolutely. But, I have accepted an offer, and I don’t want to be the one to back out now. Fingers crossed there will be no regrets later. I personally wont do well in an interview for a job I don’t really want at the time..I feel like it would be so half-hearted…and I am not giving it my all.

I am so excited, yet so terrified! The borders between Melbourne and Sydney are closing at midnight tonight…if I go to Melbourne, I don’t know when I can come back to Adelaide. Apparently, Adelaide may close the border between us and Melbourne completely soon too…It means no one can go in or out with a very good reason (i.e. emergency…). It feels like I am stepping into a warzone, just a bit. Melbourne recorded its record number of new cases today.. Almost 200..The place is still in lockdown…so eeps.

I asked for an interesting life and I got it. I will keep updating this blog through my transition to the Covid-Central of Australia, lol. Stay tuned.

I am big big girl in a big big world

There was this song that my sister and I liked when we were younger called “I am a big big girl in a big big world”...and that’s how I am feeling right now.

I am just staring at the word BIG and it looks so weird. lol.

I just got a call from the interstate job I had an interview and I got told that they would like to offer the position to me- as long as I pass my police clearance and working with children checks etc.. !!

Exciting news…It hasn’t even sunk in yet and I am already stressing about how I am going to move myself and all my shit down to Melbourne…

Speaking of Melbourne, it is currently the Covid-19 hotspot in Australia…it seems like we have a smaller but surely a second surge of cases in Melbourne. There are currently some areas in which there are higher numbers of Covid Cases in Melbourne that are under lockdown, while the rest are free to roam with restrictions.

Adelaide, however is back to normal ..almost. There are still some restrictions, but at least most things are open already.

There are so many things to think about in the move..where will I stay, how will I get there, should I bring my car? WHERE WILL I PLAY BADMINTON?!

But anyway, I will worry about that more tomorrow.

On Job interviews

Job interviews can be so nerve-wracking and I wonder if they really do paint an accurate picture of whether or not we will be a good employee. Certain people seem to fare better in the talk themselves up department and others not so much. How do you know that the one who talks better in the interview will be a better match than the more shy interviewee who is actually much more hard-working and efficient employee?

Do you act yourself or must you force yourself to pretend to be someone else?

You literally have to give a great first impression from the start…When you first apply with your resume and cover letter, you’ve got to make sure that you demonstrate that you can construct legible sentences and structure things well.

After that, there may be an additional screening phone call or automated online interview, which you have to demonstrate you can cohesively construct something verbally well.

Then the next step if you make it as a live person interview with one or more panel members. In this case, you have to actively demonstrate your listening and quick thinking skills as you answer an array of various and sometimes random questions about yourself or a hypothetical scenario.

As this snapshot may not be sufficient enough for them, they will also contact your referees to make sure that you are not lying through your teeth about your most recent jobs and that you are indeed a good person to hire.

After you have passed all these hurdles you have to have police checks conducted on you, to make sure you ain’t a criminal or someone who has incurred many traffic accidents. If you are working in a hospital, they also need to test your blood to make sure your immunisations are all up to date.

Then you are finally hired! But you still have that six to twelve month probationary period where they can let you go at anytime. -.-;;

It’s such a pain moving from one job to another, but sometimes you have no choice…there just may be no room to grow for you in your current job. Life is tough, contracts finish, you may have bad management, bad colleagues… It is no surprise that as a millennial I have probably changed jobs more often than my dad has through his entire working life.

On Masculinity

Do all girls like big guns, tall strong men with big you know whats? I honestly don’t and therefore…does that make me abnormal?? I don’t know.

Why does society have ingrained in us that the guy is the ‘Protector of the small and weak girl’, saves the girl… lifts weights, and says and does all those romantic stuff. Men are usually seen as leaders, they are the ones who ask the girl out… propose marriage.

In my little mind, I imagine the man driving the car, paying for dinner, lifting those heavy boxes…call me old-fashioned, but that’s my thoughts on men. I would feel weird if the guy was skinnier or lighter than me…if they were shorter…I might even feel insecure if they were cuter or prettier than me…

Since when did we develop such preference for men to be a certain way?

I do think girls have it hard too, in that they need to look pretty, slim, and act in a certain way to attract guys…but often we forget, guys get teased for being small, short, and weak looking.

Then again I suck at cooking, cleaning, ironing, and those stereotypical tasks that women are usually depicted in doing. =s

I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

How sick should you be before you take a sick day?

I woke up yesterday after a really really bad night of sleep. I definitely slept weirdly and had the start of what might have been in a really bad migraine. I took one of my new migraine tablets and waited. I would try brave the workday..my contract was going to finish soon, taking another sickie before my last week would look bad right? I don’t want to burn any bridges, in case I get another contract in the future.

The thought did cross my mind, maybe I should call in sick.. ? Or shouldn’t I?

It was make or break. In the past, I have tried going to work despite having a bad migraine with nausea…only then to have to go home and vomit the living daylights out of me. Some days, I take some meds and try to do my job with a headache or sickness…

However, in the case of yesterday, with the new medication seemed to help and I managed to make it through the WHOLE workday mostly unaffected. I was a bit tired and a bit lethargic, but who wouldn’t be after a six-day working week?

Some people I know take a ‘sickie’ whenever they feel like they want to go to work, and they actually are perfectly fine to go to work…but others like to ‘save’ their sick days for days where they actually really really do feel unwell. I don’t think either of these options is ideal. If you save all you sick days for a rainy day and force yourself to go to work, that can’t be good for you or the company…sick days are there for you when you need it. However, taking sick days to have fun, is just something that doesn’t sit right with me…I would probably just feel guilty all day and try to make sure I don’t post anything on social media LOL. Some workplaces will require a sick certificate for every single day of sick leave taken and others might be only needed when it falls on Mondays and Fridays before or after a public holiday. etc.

But it would be interesting to hear about other people’s opinions on “how sick do you have to be to take a sick day?’

The Breaking Point

I think we all have a limit.

A point where just one small thing can put you over the edge.

Something small that usually wouldn’t bother you.

But you have had enough.

I think you know it’s happening, even when you try to convince yourself everything is okay.

People think you are fine when you are barely holding yourself together.

You try to brush it away, pretend it is not real…BUT IT IS there and it eats away like you like an internal parasite.

The parasite is eating away at your and slowly it takes over your whole body.

Slowly you become an empty shell…Where you feel nothing, care about nothing, and do things you didn’t care about.

It’s a ticking timebomb and someday…you are gonna explode.

Then you will know.

It’s too late.

You’ve reached your breaking point.

Social Wealth

Whose place is it to determine someone’s worth in society?

Does it rely on age, gender, race, or other physical attributes? Just because someone is physically not as able to move around, does not mean they cannot contribute to society. Just look at Stephen Hawking And Nick Vujoic.

Society looks at a homeless person in the street and decides they are not worth much. However, they may be the mother of two beautiful children who have become a front line worker, they may be the beloved sister in her family. They were a precious child of their adoring parents.

Just because someone hasn’t finished school or gone to University doesn’t mean they cannot go on to do great things, look at the creator of Facebook who never finished his college degree. Just because you didn’t get a head start in life and be born into a rich family, doesn’t mean that you can’t make that a goal for yourself. Just because you didn’t grow up in a family of doctor, doesn’t mean you can’t pursue that profession for yourself.

Who is to judge whether one profession or the other has more prestige or power? Just because a cleaner isn’t getting paid as much as a top surgeon, doesn’t mean that they are any less important. There are so many important people in the world that are looked down upon and shunned in society.

I am not even sure what exactly the point I was trying to make was, but does and should your bank income and your job title determine your social status? Going through credit checks for  mortgages and credit cards, they ask how much you earn, how much you spend, and they are interested in what suburb you live in. We are reduced to a number of facts and figures and we are judged on that. It’s a strange society that we live in. It doesn’t matter if you are a reliable and honest person, if your numbers and statistics doesn’t reflect it.

2020

2020 is a big year. I can feel it already. The year I leave my 20s and enter the scary 30s. !!

It’s a year I want to knock off some things off my bucket list.

One of them being going to New Zealand. Always had planned to go…but because it seemed so close to home, it doesn’t feel like I am leaving the country. I am happy to say I have booked my flights to New Zealand and will be going on the 19th to 24th of March! Super excited…but also feeling a bit stressed…I haven’t found accommodation yet! I think when I finally get a place to stay I will feel more relieved… It’s hard to plan transport, tours, and etc without knowing where you will stay :(. I guess you can call me a homeless person while I am in NZ.

I have also managed to get VIP tickets to meet on of my favourite Jrock bands, ONE OK ROCK. SUPER excited. I have always wanted to see them live…When I was in Japan for exchange back in 2014, I wanted to see them in Japan….however they were touring in the US at that time..so I missed that opportunity. BUT they are coming to my hometown!!!!! So excited. I would have flown interstate to see them…but now no need…so might aswell splurge on VIP tickets which include a meet and greet <3, early entry, a special lanyard, and a wrist band. But most importantly, is that I get to meet them…and hopefully get a photo if I am lucky! None of my friends that are going got the VIP tickets…so hopefully I can make a friend there or find someone kind enough to help me take a photo.  I guess this would be a new addition to my bucket list.

Assuming all goes well in the jobs department, i.e. getting an extension of my current work contract or getting a new job within SA Health, I hope I can save up enough for a house/unit deposit. I am aiming for about 60-80k, which will be about the minimum 20% deposit I need for a house. Gotta keep working hard!

I have applied for the JET program..so this may affect my income levels aswell. But, no fear..doesn’t mean I can’t still be working overseas and saving for my house deposit. I haven’t heard anything back from them yet, so who knows if I will even pass the written part of the application? But at least I tried, right?

To be honest, I am not sure what else is on my latest bucket list…I think the same things that always matter will be there or not…stay fit and healthy… be present with family and enjoy time with my nephew …and be an awesome friend….travel more…finish my study…and get lots more experience in my career and keep working hard for long term goals…Oh yeah keep writing more in this blog..and other stuff which I have much neglected…

Do you have any goals or aims for 2020?

Random Rants: Are you happy right now?

When you earn more money, do you get more stingy? Or do you become more generous?

I find that the more I earn…the more I spend…but at the same time, I also try to be careful with my money. It’s a ‘balancing act’…Earn more..can spend more…thus not saving more.

It’s a conundrum. It’s great you are earning more…but you also pay more tax…and then you end up with less than you initially imagined.

The ability to earn more…means you can afford to go on holidays in which you couldn’t before…do you take the time off and go on a holiday? Or do you keep saving and saving until one day..you can’t work anymore?

Such is life…I guess you have to choose whether you are happy, satisfied with how much you have.

You could be poor and happy. You could be rich but sad.

So many decisions to make…Do you take the risk to do a job that offers you one-two month contracts at a time, with no guarantee of ongoing work? Or do you instead continue part-time work …that also doesn’t offer you any more hours? But it is permanent. Or do you remain casual, which is flexible…but where you get pushed around by the big guys up there…When it’s busy they overwork you, when it’s quiet they don’t care about you and you get no shifts. The instability of life. Choices.

Such is life.

Random rants: On Replay

Do you ever have times .. usually at the middle of the night.. when you are trying to sleep because you have work or a flight early tmoro morning… and you cannot sleep.. because you keep ruminating over something again and again… so much so that the story becomes twisted and strays from the original. Your emotions, feelings, and thoughts taint your memory of what really happened…

The story becomes what you want it to be instead. A fragment of the truth, but what is the truth? Each person will tell it in a slightly different way. Just look at the bible, in the New Testament there are several books written about the same event but by different people.

Alas, this late night post to try to get off my mind what has been weighing on my mind for the last few weeks. I think, I need closure, I have to settle things, for once and hopefully for all.

Random Rants: Judging People

I have always thought I was pretty good at judging people…it’s not the best habit and my sister constantly scolds me for it…Tells me I should be more understanding…What if something happened to them that made them that way?

She explained to me that some people get jealous and they act out and bully people they feel they are stronger than. I asked so many times ‘Why?’ do people treat others so badly? Maybe they are judging us too?

I have started at a new site this week…what I had always dreamed of…working in Adelaide’s mental health hospital!!And boyyyy was my first few days were a bit scary. Left on my own to manage a dispensary in which I had a one-day handover with the person going on leave. Different processes, different people, different patients…It was a bit much. On top of that, there was one lady whom I had spoken to over the phone before working at another site. I had judged her to be extremely rude and patronising-even over the phone~! She was demanding things be done and belittling me. I don’t know if she remembers but I do remember her, and I just so happened to be working at the same place as her now.

I sensed there was some hostility among the group of pharmacists that were working together, there was some bickering…quarrels… We are so understaffed…it is pretty terrible and makes people unhappy. I just try to make the best of it..as someone covering I can only do so much…

But, suddenly this person yesterday…whom I had barely spoken a single word to in the past three… days..Asked me how I was going …if I was settling in? I was taken back..no one else had asked me… I am used to being thrown in the deep end and trying to swim. I asked myself, maybe she just takes some time to open up…maybe there was so much change happening that she assumed I would cause her more work and trouble?

Overall, I like it. To be absolutely honest I am terrified when I walk out to the ward to go to the staff toilet. But I tell myself, it is going to be okay. If they are allowed to walk around the ward, they should be safe! I feel so bad for being scared of them…because this is what I thought I wanted to do? To help people with mental health to get better. But, why am I so scared? I think it’s because I am so used to seeing these people behind bulletproof glass and having security around me all the time, I forget these are normal people. They all seem to have a glazed look in their eyes… of sadness, of loss, of something else. What happened to them for them to send them to a mental health hospital?

So many stories…so many things…I really do hope I can make the most of my time there and learn as much as I can to learn and grow as a pharmacist and as a person.

I am thankful that I am living the dream, even though it doesn’t feel like it. Today we had two fire alarms go off, so there were constant alarm bells ringing. We also got two phone calls from Police officers who needed the deputy director to identify some dead bodies of previous patients…there are patients lying on the ground outside.

I can finally say, “I made it to where I want to be”…But then I also realise that there is more to climb…I went through one door, but this is just opening even more doors and corridors to walk through.

Be yourself

Find yourself someone who can accept you for who you are. Your faults, your strengths, who can understand the way you think..if they make you feel bad for being yourself, then they probably aren’t the right person for you.

I read somewhere before, that just because a relationship didn’t work out.. doesn’t mean that there is something broken or unlovable about you. Yes, maybe there is things you need to work on.. but that doesn’t mean that no one will ever love you. It can be sad when you get your heart broken… but sadly that’s part of life.

I don’t know if I believe in ‘The one’ anymore…maybe there will be many ‘The Ones’ and maybe there will just be one. But I truly believe if you put all your effort into something and it didn’t work out.. it’s not the end. It’s the beginning of something else. You change your perception.. you know a little bit better what you like and don’t like… you grow a little stronger.. even though you feel so weak.

Maybe there isn’t even ‘the one’ for you… and that’s fine. I think it’s fine. I believe You can live comfortably by yourself.. and that’s okay too. No one to hurt you, to worry you or cause you to be angry. Maybe a dog or cat. Who knows.

I don’t know. I just think take it as it is. Sometimes life doesn’t go your way.. but just gotta reflect on it and try bounce back.

Scared to be Lonely

When we are lonely, we wonder when we will ever find someone to share our life with…

When we finally get into a relationship, we are worried how long will it last for, what obstacles will we face.. what is our future? Are they the ‘one’ for me?

Is there even the ‘one’ for me? What if there are many others better than this ‘one’? Should I stay or should I go?

When we are in a relationship we should really let go of, we fear the loneliness again…

When we let go of that relationship, we fear if we make the right choice, but we are afraid to show our feelings…because you don’t want to be vulnerable…

When we try running back to the relationship, we may find out that they have already moved on and we are hurt again…even more hurt and lonely than before

When we are at this point, we ask ourselves, did the relationship make us anymore less lonely or more happy? Who said we had to be in a relationship to be happy?

When we realise this, we realise we can be happy now…and that being a alone doesn’t mean you are lonely. We have great friends, family, and most of all-pets to take away our loneliness

Podcast Reviews: Stories I tell on dates

So I recently binged listened (is that even a thing) to a podcast called “Stories I tell on Dates”- an interesting autobiography by Paul Shirley who was previously an NBA player.

I am not sure if it was his voice..or the stories or a combination of both…it sucked me in right from the introduction! What I loved was that he turned everyday experiences into fascinating -on-the-edge thrill type stories. He seemed to have gone through a lot of different things in his childhood and early adulthood…but haven’t we all? I have friends who have travelled the world like a nomad, are semi-professional pole dancers, have colleagues who have worked in emergency departments and been assaulted… There are so many people I encounter with so many stories…I almost feel overwhelmed just thinking about the sheer amount of stories that people hold.

I truly do not believe anyone is boring. Yes, their personality might put you off..but if language and personality wasn’t an issue, I think I would be able to befriend anyone. Not saying I have good personality skills or anything…but I think everyone has a story and there are only so many stories that are told for everyone to hear. Big props for Paul Shirley for sharing his story to the world…He let us into his deepest darkest secrets and thoughts…as a side bonus, I have also learnt a lot more about basketball, basketball injuries, and random places in America that I will now add to my bucket list to visit. If you haven’t already, I highly encourage to check out his podcast…I believe it is found on iTunes, Spotify, and on other podcast listening apps!

After finishing the whole podcast series in less than 48 hours…I feel somewhat inspired to start recording my own podcasts now…I have never thought about telling my story before…to be absolutely honest,  I hate the sound of my own voice! It makes me cringe listening to it…But, I think maybe that is a common occurrence? Because we don’t normally hear ourselves speak..I am sure our voices aren’t as bad as it seems…?

Telling a story with a voice is similar to I guess writing about it…but I guess it feels more natural…in a way, because you cannot delete (well I guess you can edit) what you say and you go more with the flow of things! I think I might take a small break from my studying and record my first podcast about a story of my life…

… edit if you want to check out my first snippet of life recording..

Stories of my life: Episode one: The time I was in a rock band

Is prevention always better than the cure?

This has been an thought of mine in the last few days… why does it always seem like we make a choice in either focusing our efforts on either ‘preventing’ something from happening or working on the ‘cure’ of it however temporary.

A classic example would be having vaccinations or waiting till you got a bug and taking medicines to ‘treat’ it. Do you pit yourself subject to numerous jabs by needles in order to give yourself the best possible chance against some pathogens you may or may not encounter?

Would your answer be easier if there is ‘no’ cure to a illness?

Straying to another prevention vs cure type scenario.. would be the cosmetic industry.. I see there are some companies that focus on solely on skin care.. moisturisers, toners, cleansing foams, eye creams, face masks… etc.. then there are other companies hat purely do make up..eyeshadow, blush, lipsticks.. you get my drift right? So, if you are the preventative type person.. you would focus a great of your money, time, and energy on making your skin as healthy as possible .. and so you may not need make up because your skin is so ‘naturally’ good.

On the other hand, maybe you are not a patient person.. not one that follows a strict thorough skin care routine.. they only put on makeup when they are outside anyways.. they rather not waste time on a long and tedious skin care routine… thy instead focus heavily on make up.. which can turn a pimply, acne-prone, dry skinned etc skin into a beautiful model perhaps from a magazine… you can barely recognise them without make up. They are just that good at make up..however , when the make up is gone.. they actually have terrible skins..

The last example I will give is.. about the decisions we make in life.. our openness towards letting other come into our lives. Have we had our trust broken before? Are we afraid to love or to let others love us? Are we always afraid that they will leave us or worse.. hurt us in a way that we feel we truly never heal…?

Or do we recklessly let people in, with the hopes that this person will be different and that they wont hurt us..? When they do, we get ‘treatment’.. which could be in all different forms… maybe its bingeing on food, random sex, drugs, alcohol, or just letting yourself be depressed for awhile and hoping you will get better.

How about you? Are you a preventative or a treatment prone person? Which had the better life?
