My constant battle with Iron Deficiency

Ever since I was young, since I started my period, my iron levels have always swung up and down. This may have been attributed to the monthly blood loss and also due to the fact I refused to red meat from the age of 10. I started eating meat again at age 20, as by that time I had stopped menstruating for around 6 months…and on advice of our local doctor, i.e. my scary Aunty… I was semi coerced to start eating meat again.

I still remember my first meal that had meat. Wok in the box stir fry. Tastes like shitty rubber imo. It felt disgusting. Why do people like meat? But if I wanted to become ‘normal’ I had to do this….

Eventually it got better… chicken was easier to eat… and pork was not had as well.. it felt good to not be the odd one out at All you can Eat Korean BBQs, buffets, and random dinners at friend’s houses… I didn’t want to be rude and not eat the food given to me.. I just sort of brushed the food aside. Back then, not many people were into ‘Vegetarian’ or Vegan diets, aside those who were for religious reasons.

Anyways, I digressed too much. The moral of the story is that I kind of ate what my mum cooked at home… and yeah it meat most of the time. But since moving out, I realised now I am in charge of my own diet and I can eat what I want. I really tried to imitate what we ate at home.. beef mince, pork…but I soon realised.. I am no chef and secondly, I honestly don’t like the texture of meat. I don’t know how to cook it … so I might as well stick with what I can cook well and go back to my mainly plant-based and seafood diet. This is my forte.. my fridge is full of basically 70% veggies, 10% Protein (Fish and Tofu), 20% carbs.

And hence, I would not be surprised at all when I am due for my next blood test to check my iron levels… that it is most likely to be low. :(.

I do not want to take supplements as I had many side effects such as black Tarry stools from them… EWW. TMI? Not enough imo!! Hmmm if its really bad, maybe I can request an iron infusion?

I guess it depends on the blood test 😔😔

How to be comfortable #forever alone

There are going to be times where you will be alone, whether driving to work, going on work vacations or if you don’t know anyone in a social situation…or even during Covid lockdowns. I think it is always useful to have something to do in case you have time to kill and don’t want to waste it.

1. Have a piece of technology with you at all times…most likely at least your phone…so you can use it to surf the internet, use social media, or write ideas for future blog posts…

2. Have a book to read…Whether a light novel, autobiography or whatever. It is perfectly acceptable to sit somewhere to read, you would less uncomfortable with a book than without. Can even read manga or ebooks from your phone like Webtoons! Or listen to books being read out loud on Audiobooks etc.

3. Have some good music to listen to. Emo music is great.

4. Get a pet. Dog, cat, fish, or turtle etc. Even plushie or bolster is fine. xD. Anything you can cuddle really….

5. Learn how to play an instrument..but don’t spend too much on your first instrument xD you can learn from Youtube videos.

6. Just learn to love yourself and to love the friends and family around you. You can do this with the help of Apps, self-health books, psychological services, or just spending time on yourself.

7. Maybe get a plant? But only if you can keep it alive, nothing is more depressing than a dead plant in the house :(.

8. Watch online streamers or even start streaming yourself! Maybe a good way to connect with other people or make new friends.

9. Get into the stock or share market!! Why not use all that spare time you have being single and grow your investment portfolio and become a bit more well off than you are now. Also look into your Super Fund and see if they are really growing your supperannuation for you or is it time to choose a different option for yourself.

10. Work out and get yourself the best body you can have! Go to the gym as much as you can, get fit, and get healthy..or play a sport, like badminton!! I guess this is good for making friends and socialising as such, if your area let’s you go back to indoor spoorts that is.

I am guessing the reality of these things I listed is because when you DO eventually get into a relationship, you most likely will have less time to yourself and to do what you want. Why not make the most of this single prime time and make it your time..

Update: A New look & CoronaWorries

As you can see, I’ve been playing around with the blog a bit and even made a logo… I’ve paid for an actual website address! So you can now visit the site on www.howtoadultwithjoy.com  !! I hope to do more updates (now that most of outside work activities have been cancelled/postponed) and will and have been working on my book as well (More mentioned later)!

How is everyone doing with the Coronavirus? I’ve been touching base with family and friends all over the world and it seems that it has affected every single person I have spoken to so far…From Japan to Canada, and to Calfornia… The virus has spread all over the world…It is very much here in Australia as well, the number of new cases is rising steadily and in response, our governments have put in tough new measures to curb the virus. As mentioned last time, the social distancing continues to apply and just yesterday night the Prime Minister announced that all pubs, clubs, entertainment venues, gyms, indoor sporting places, and churches will be closed from midday today. This means basically I have no social life…because the only other thing I do besides work and study is exercise at the gym or play badminton. However, I have decided to use the time that I usually spend on exercise to do other things at home…such as working on my blog, planning my future book, and I have started playing the guitar again!! Having experienced ONE OK ROCK live in a concert…I am so motivated to learn and play their songs! It had been over a year since I played the guitar last…and at that time I really wanted to do a cover of the song ‘Yellow’ the Chinese version featured the movie ‘Crazy Rich Asians’.

I hope for everyone else that is in self-isolation (like my sister and her family who have just come home from Japan), will be able to work on those hobbies and things that they have put aside for so long! May you also learn some new skills! I have friends that are doing virtual gym classes online in their rooms and they said they had a good work out! There are many things we can learn and continue to do even at home. I guess now is a good time to be an introvert. :).

I’ve always thought I was an introvert that doesn’t like meeting up with other people and going out…but since these rules have been put into place, I have finally realised how much I miss going out and doing the things I am used to. May we take some time to reflect on where we are and what we hope to learn from this challenging time. I hope everyone can remember to keep in touch with each other and check up on your elderly/vulnerable friends and see if you can help them in any way. We are social distancing and that does not mean being socially isolated!

My thoughts go out to those who have lost their jobs or don’t have work for the next few months…I hope that you will be able to find another job and have adequate support over the next few months. I know my government is increasing the handouts for those who are doing it tough…and have decreased the requirements that are needed to qualify for those programs.

Also, on a side note, thank you for the 50 subscribers and having over 3000 visitors to this website! Thank you so much for visiting, reading, and being a part of this journey to adulthood.

Code Brown: External Emergency

Today I woke up to a thick smog across the score…the smell of smoke can be smelt. :(.

This week has been a difficult one…in the place I live, the temperatures soared to over 40 degrees celsius and the heat continued into the night for four days. It was really hard to sleep at night..because it was so hot and I couldn’t fall or stay asleep…I also don’t have a good functioning air conditioner in my room…and my parents also wouldn’t let us keep the air conditioner in the kitchen.

The sweltering heat, lack of sleep, and just overall increased workload of the upcoming Christmas period and patients admitted due to overheating meant a very tired me. I went to work and back home. Doing nothing in-between. It’s all I knew..Work Home, Work Home, Work and Home. Very boring. How did I even use to manage to study for the medical entrance exam and for university? Thank God we have a summer break for uni! When it’s sooo hot, you really just feel like doing nothing! Luckily we have an air conditioner at work…phew

Oh yes, the title of my post, Because of the intense heatwave this week, a Code Brown was activated at the hospital I work at..which means an external emergency is occurring. We prepared for the worst, we had some increased amount of staff to help out in the dispensary in case it got super busy from the hospital trying to discharge everyone they can before Christmas time…and also to free up beds in case people affected by the heat need to be admitted.

In case I don’t update before Christmas or the New Year, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!

May 2020 be a better year than this year!

Random rants: Expensive​ Hobbies

I have a friend who likes loves cars…I am talking obsessed. Basically, their whole life is cars. Buying them, selling them, fixing them, cleaning, you-name-it and they are probably have done that to a car. They have their own car that they have modified to their liking and use it to go on tracks to race with. As I can imagine, it is an expensive hobby… apparently, each time they take their car on the racing (?) tracks they have to spend hundreds if not thousands to have all the tyres, brakes, and other parts of their car replaced. To me, because I do not understand why someone would waste spend so much money on such a temporary ‘in the moment’ high kinda thing.

Then I was listening to a podcast about people who collect ‘high-end shoes’. Someone on the podcast said they had around 40 pair of shoes in their collection…the thing I don’t understand is that they just buy the shoes to put on display…they don’t even wear them! That boggles my mind that you would buy something just to look at them…Each pair ranges from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand…Did you know there are such things as ‘Shoe Conventions?’

I don’t mean to belittle other people’s hobbies and interests… I guess it has made me more aware that other people have passions and interests that I might not understand. I think back to what I spend most of my money on…and it has been on travelling overseas in different countries and learning…so I guess that is my passion and to other people, it may seem like a waste of money.

I finally figured out how to make a proper podcast recording and not end it up being a crappy cut version on youtube…!

I actually heard about an app used for recording and distributing podcasts- Anchor, because they sponsored one of my favourite Podcasts…And it’s pretty awesome! I am not super good with it..but so far have been able to publish my podcast and also it has some built-in ability to add background music to the podcasts…It also helped me create the small thumbnail for the podcast too… Anyways, if you are interested in making your podcast- download the Anchor App from your App Store. 🙂

Stories of my Life

I have no set schedule for uploads as of yet… I think it will be as random or even more random as the updates on this blog…

I am going to be talking about events in my life that have impacted me to become the person I am today. My vision for the podcast is that I will eventually get other people on the podcast and have conversations or interviews with them! I’ll see how I go first…

In the face of uncertainty

I have always been a person who hated surprises or unknowns…I am just really bad at dealing with things that do not go to plan.

I think that might be the case for others too…When things change..when your favourite supermarket closes down, when that brand of leave in hair conditioner that has been discontinued or when the ownership of your favourite sushi restaurant goes to someone else… All these inconveniences and small mishaps can build up and you suddenly feel like nothing is a constant anymore. These things are what hold us down, ground us and perhaps makes us feel ‘safe’.

But the truth is, nothing lasts forever, all things have to come to an end at some stage or another. What in life is truly guaranteed? Except, Death of course…unless you somehow have worked out a way to become immortal. If so, please let me know your secrets…

In the face of uncertainty, what do you choose? Do you choose to take a risk or do you start with what is familiar, safe and the same?

House Maintenance

Another aspect of owning a house would be to learn how to look after it…to the best of your ability..

So my parents on a spur of the moment thing decided to change the tap in our kitchen sink..they bought the tap and asked my brother to put it together.

My brother went in blind, with no instruction sheet or nothing and began the dismantling of the sink with a variety of make shift tools-because he deemed my father’s tools inadequate. So the kitchen knife became a makeshift saw. Once the tap was off it was all about trying to install the new tap. But, alas..how are we to hold the tap in place?!?

My brother looked around and fold a squarish piece of metal and assumed that was what  would hold the tap in place… however! It did not fit.

This is when my expertise was called upon. He asked me to google, “How to remove and install a faucet”. We watched the youtube video… but still we seemed to be missing a crucial part to the tap…I asked him if he had the box or something from the tap.

He said, no my parents had only given him the tap and the squarish metal piece and some random screw. I did not believe they would throw away the box that fast! (being the hoarders they are)…I located the box…and lo and behold…what was in the box? The instruction sheet and the missing parts we needed to install the tap…

and alas with our “teamwork”- (I found the pieces !! and I used my phone a torch light- crucial essential elements) we as a team managed to install the new tap. To our great surprise, it worked~ but yeah the tap is still very loose…not sure how we can fix that…

I think plumbers usually change taps and things like that…but my parents are more stingy on spending money to get things done properly, when they can give it a crack themselves…

It is however, I observed a strain on the back and painful working upwards…

I so much more appreciate the hard work plumbers do.

 

Happy Mother’s Day~

It’s mothers day in Australia today…it’s a good time to reflect on what our mothers have or have not done for us…

I am not a mother myself, but I can imagine that being a mother would be an incredible experience and challenge. I don’t think anyone can be prepared for motherhood (or fatherhood), it is thrust upon you and suddenly you are in charge of looking after a vulnerable child.

I imagine there is quite a pressure that is bestowed upon you to be a a good example to your kid… I think by thinking about it in that way, I would feel more inclined to be more forgiving to things that my mother may have not done well when I was a child.

I think parenthood is a prime symbol for entering adult hood…paired with getting your own house, getting a full time job, and marriage…it just seems like the natural progression for being an adult. Saying that, I do know many do not follow this such plan and that’s entirely fine too. However, I do know that some people, no matter how long they have been a parent, will forever be a child at heart.

At my age now, my mother was already a mother of two children…That thought …sort of scares me…I can’t imagine having even one child at this age…It just seems like such a massive decision to make…to have kids…Because it’s not like a pet, where if things don’t work out you can possibly give it to a shelter or to someone else… Pets come and go…but children are for life…….!!!

I feel like I had super high expectations of my parents as a child…I wanted them and wished that they were someone who they were not…as a child I did not see them as just individuals who are older and wiser than me…I thought them as stupid, selfish, mean and they were NOT allowed to make mistakes in my book! A bit has changed since then, but more often than not, it’s hard to see parents as normal people…just is.. :O

Life is a game analogy -Part 2- Sushi Go Party

Have you heard of this game? I recently played it with some friends over the Easter Long weekend that just passed! It’s actually really really fun…even though I am incredibly bad at it. 

Despite its initial deceptive cuteness and looking like a light hearted game, it can soon become very competitive as we try to win the race to the be the first at the finish line and you also need some sort of maths skills to add and subtract in this game. Upon reflection after playing this game, I believe that this could teach me, and maybe you a life lesson or two.

Before getting into that, I will explain how this game works, for those who haven’t played before!

Each player starts off with seven cards in their hands, then when the game starts you put  down one card you want to keep and pass the rest of your hand to the person on your left. You receive a new hand from the person on your right…and you repeat..choose a card and then pass the rest on. The round finishes when every one has put down 7 cards and there are no more cards being passed around.

The cards all represent different amounts of points you can get or lose and the description of their points is at the bottom. For example, if you have two tempura cards-you get 5 points (if you just have one you get nothing). There are also eight rules that have been decided upon at the start of the game-that is in the middle of the board. These rules decide how much special combinations of cards are worth…also there are also rewards and penalties for having the most of a card or the least. For example, in our first round we had a rule in which the person who had the most Pudding cards got 6 points, the person who had the least had six points deducted off their total score in a round. In another round, we had a rule that who ever collected four special cards over three rounds would get 12 bonus points.

Upon reflection, I think this game can teach you about spending, saving, and thinking about investments. It might be a long stretch, but it requires you to have to think, What is the best way, with the least risk to get the most points.
In real life, I guess we are playing with money, stocks, shares and other investments. There’s a risk that we will lose out if we don’t have insurance or cover for a particular thing… Just like when you see a Pudding Card come around, you have to think is it worth taking one, just so that you might not be the one with the least amount of pudding cards and get six points deducted, or whether or not you take it, it will happen anyway? In life, we have also have to think and consider, should I get health insurance or car insurance, just in case something happens that I do not foresee and I suddenly have to fork out a huge amount of money? I could be winning by purchasing health insurance and actually use it when needed, or maybe I might be losing money as I never needed it…

While I was playing the game, I was quite defensive and not totally confident. My strategy was to try not get points deducted as much as possible…However, I think this is one of the reasons why I did not do so well; in retrospect. I was so focussed on not losing any points, that I actually didn’t gain any or many points. ..I think for a very big proportion of my life has been spent trying to avoid bad things from occurring… Not trying this incase it doesn’t work out, too scared to do that because what if I get hurt…Not willing to take risks on investment, incase I get scammed… I was just so worried about what might happen, that I forgot that if I focused on getting more points in the first place, those deductions would not have made such a great difference either way. Having no points at all, is like trying to survive without money in the real world…:(

Yes, its a risk to get out there and try…Why? Because you might fail. Because people might laugh at you for trying. Because may try to make you feel like you aren’t enough.

But, you know what? The jokes on them, because you took the risk, you might win big and win the game in the end. (Or you might not, but we don’t talk about that.. )

Dreams stay dreams when you don’t plan and set goals to achieve…

Another update?… :O but not really…

I’ve decided I need to start aggressively (passive aggressively?) start chasing my dream of writing a book, because if I procrastinate forever, when am I every going to get started right? Who knows when I will finally get the motivation to chase after something that seems so hard, no better day than today. I hope that’s the same for you…if we just keep dreaming that some day we will do this, or wait for perfect timing…sometimes its good to be inpatient and just start chasing it…because maybe the perfect timing is now. You’ll never be as young as you are now…so go forth and use your youth!!

Money and Happiness?

So somehow at work today we came upon the discussion of how much one earns and their level if happiness.

One of the doctors was telling a patient about how he left his full time job at a public hospital and chose to instead work in Clinical Trials 3.5 days a week part-time.

The patient immediately asked him, do you work somewhere else on the rest of the days?

The doctor said, “No, 3.5 days is enough for me (they must earn a lot more than me..:()… he said,”I could work more, but earning more money wont make me more happy”. This doctor is one smart man, and I think he made a wise decision for himself. But, not everyone is lucky enough to be able to only work 3.5 days a week and have enough to live on…

Time to become a doctor..!!!

Let things not go to plan

How many people have imagined that they would be something, married someone, or gave birth to x number of kids by this time?

We only beat ourselves up when we haven’t followed to the tee our plans and visions for our lives.

I am super guilty of trying to plan and control all the variables of my life. I have used countless number of diaries, online calendars/apps, vision boards and basically notes things to do/achieve stuck just all over my room.

We all make our own timeline for ourselves, but so often than not… we don’t end up achieving said goals and we end up feeling upset at ourselves. We check facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and notice that everyone else is buying their “dream house”, getting hitched, having kids and just living a life that seems way more ahead and special than our own. We convince ourselves that we aren’t as good as them…

But I know how it feels to be the one envied.. I have friends overseas who only had my Facebook photos to see how I am and they think how “Happy” I looked in those photos I was tagged in… and how “Perfect” my life seemed. But little did they know, .. how that time I was actually anxious, stressed and burnt out. We paint the picture we want to show the world of how “good” our life seems… but it actually does more harm than good. People think we are fine, when we really aren’t.

In order to be more true to myself and to actually see how people are, instead of assuming…I stopped my use of those social networking websites that promote showing off the good side your life. Obviously, there are great benefits of these social networking sites and they are not “evil” or “bad” to use, but when we start comparing our lives to others on a daily basis and get upset, isn’t it time to give it a break and just start living your own life? That’s my own choice anyways…

My key take home message is..

Just live your own life in your own timeline and don’t worry about what anybody else is doing.

Leave the world in a better place than you found it

I read this sentence a farewell letter by a leaving University President- he said “I am glad I am leaving the University in a better state that I found it in”.

I have been meditating on these words and thinking how this could apply to all of us…in every situation… a goal that we could all strive for.

Can we challenge ourselves to leave the world that we live in, in a better state than we found it?

I certainly am up to this challenge…for example, in my work places…if I see problems, hazards, bullying,  and things that I could see can be improved, I do my best to try improve/do something about it.

I wasn’t always like this though, I used to think that things get better because it was other people’s responsibility to make it better.

I taught myself from a young age that I wasn’t a leader, I was just a mere follower. I never put my hand up to be an Student Representative or on any student boards, because I didn’t care enough about others. I expected things to come handed to me on a silver platter and wanted other people to do the hard work, the rallying, the change and take action.

I’ve slowly realised, even if you see yourself as a mere follower,  you are still a leader in your own way. Whether it is your influence on family, friends or colleagues around you, you still have influence. You don’t need to be the president of the United States of America or head of the student council to be someone that people want to follow.
Even when you train up a new employee or help someone, you are showing love, leadership and leading by example.  You can change the world in all different ways, whether its by recycling, finding ways to use solar power, saving water or cleaning up the environment…we can all do our bit, small and large. ..

I think I have gone slightly off tangent… BUT I hope you will join me in this journey of life, to not make it a selfish one, but one where we can leave this world in a slightly better place than we found it. 

50 Shades of Grey… thinking

Sometimes we tell ourselves things have to be a certain way or we won’t be and can’t be happy. People with OCD will understand what I mean…

This is an extremely unhealthy and unproductive way to think.

We tell ourselves things like,  “If only I get that job or promotion, then I will be happy” , “If only that girl/guy liked me then I could be happy“…If only …[insert desire thing here]…then I would be happy…:(

How long is your “happy” feeling going to last anyway?

We are basically just setting ourselves up for failure…with the thinking that we wont ever be “happy” until something we desire happens…Does that mean we are just going to be “unhappy” until we get that thing?

Why do people desire this temporary feeling of happiness? It is such a fleeting, fickle moment in time that simmers down and disappears in a matter of hours, days or maybe if we are lucky weeks.

As I think they say in physics, that if something goes up, then it must also come down.

After we get desired happiness, we are at a limbo…are we happy now? Are we content? Probably not…you probably already found something else to crave for/desire…

Having black and white thinking about our dreams, goals and ambitions is not a good thing..instead we should thinking of them as shades of grays.

Yes, it is good to have these dreams, goals and ambitions, but we shouldn’t let these things determine whether we are happy people. How about we aim for that goal, but if we don’t reach it we can still be content that we are not where we used to be?

Just because that job that you got didn’t turn out to be what you thought it would be, the relationship that you were so sure would end in marriage; ended breaking up, even if you took an entrance exam three times and failed every time…. it doesn’t mean that you failed… it doesn’t mean you cannot be happy now. 

Hey, be content. You have not reached your destination yet, but why not enjoy the journey? Who knows, you may even find a different path that is even greater than the one you had pictured for yourself.  Things don’t have to be black and white, they can be grey. Be kind to yourself,  give yourself permission to be happy now…enjoy the journey, because this journey is life long.

Happiness doesn’t fall upon you. It’s something that you actively have to choose to be, strive for, and work for. It is being aware that everything isn’t great now, but that you can be still content with where you are and know that you are going somewhere among the storm we call life. 

Try live life with a bit of grey in it.
