How to *Think* about buying a house

If you know me in person, I probably would have told you this, I want to work hard so that I can buy my own place and finally get another dog! Childish? Maybe. I’ve been saying this, in addition, telling people I want to travel overseas to London and Europe…which is probably off the cards for the next few months. I’ve said it for a long time and one of the reasons why I haven’t got there yet is because I have procrastinated and not done much research on how to buy a house :(.

I don’t know how other people seem to have got there so fast! Maybe it is because I am picky and because I want to save up as much as I can for that initial deposit and get a decent house… There are so many things to consider! Asides from having to have a stable income to be able to pay the mortgage for the house, you also need a good credit score. It might be also beneficial to get a mortgage broker to help you liaise with mortgage lenders to get you the best rate that you can get.

You also have to research a good place to buy a property and also consider things that are around the property such as which schools that property is zoned for. You might not have kids of your own, but if you ever want to resell, you could get a higher price if you are in the zone of a good school. I think it is important to consider buying a property that will increase in value over time and not depreciate…Otherwise, you might be selling at a loss if you have to ever move for whatever reason 😦

For the type of house, you probably don’t want to invest in an apartment or a one room unit, as they will be difficult to resell later on and you may even lose money in the process. I have also read it is not advisable to purchase a house that hasn’t been built yet! They could end up dodgy or not what you expected… Personally, I don’t want a house that requires a lot of work to be done on it…because with that money I could have gotten a better property for a bit extra that didn’t require so much work. Because I am lazy and I also probably won’t know what I am doing.

There is so much to think about, how did my parents manage to do that? I suppose it was different for them, house prices were lower and they had help from my dad’s parents. I remember when we were house hunting for the house we currently live in. My parents asked me for my opinion of the house and I still remember saying, “I like the tiles in the bathroom, let’s get it”  and we got it. I am still very picky about the bathrooms to this day and YES it will still determine whether I get a particular house or not.

Oh, the joys of adulting. Earning your own money finally, but it never seems enough. It’s more than you ever had, but it STILL isn’t enough to afford a house in this day and age :(. Oh, the joys of millennial life 😦

re: Employment

Someone once said, “Work a job that you love and you will never have worked a day in your life”.  Or something like that. Working is an integral part of of the adult life in the current day society. Because we work, society is able to function as well as it does. While there are many benefits to working, there are some major disadvantages as well. This post will discuss both sides of this area further.

Employment is vital to an adult’s life, this is because we all know we need an income to survive and by survival, I mean having a roof over our heads, food to eat, clothes on our backs, and money to buy food and clothing. Work also provides a routine in our lives and gives our life some type of purpose while on earth and perhaps could help answer the question of “Why am I on Earth?” (or not). Having a job can also boost our self-esteem and self-confidence especially if it is something we are proud of telling others, but even if it doesn’t, at least it shows that you are earning your own income. Other additional benefits of work include the social aspects of meeting new people, working together, or talking to clients or patients. Our workplaces also allow us to learn new skills and help keeps our minds active. By working, we decrease our reliance on government handouts. For me personally, working throughout my university has always been my means to be able to travel to different places in the world. Now that I have graduated, I am working to save up for a deposit for a house. Money is a catalyst for some sort of happiness, temporary or not.

In saying that, there are some negative aspects to being in employment. In Asia specifically, where the working day tends to go into the night and there far fewer holidays, there are increased cases of people dying from overwork. One particular case was that of the death of a popular animator, Kazunori Mizuno, of the well-known series ‘Naruto’, his cause of death being overwork. The Japanese even had a word for those who die from overwork, which is ‘Karoushi’. Asides the possibility of burning out at work, the workplace environment is also a very important aspect to consider. A toxic work environment can be detrimental to your physical and mental health. Workplace bullying is one of the biggest cause of anxiety and depression. Work also takes up a lot of time in your day and hence hindering to do what you like. However, without money, there is a limit to what you can do. It’s a catch 22.

Work plays an important part in our lives and is a central part of helping society to function. It has a beneficial way to learn new skills, increase our self-esteem, and giving us a routine for our lives. Whilst there are many benefits, unfortunately, workplace bullying and burnout from overworking are some serious concerns that arise from unhealthy working conditions.

Is prevention always better than the cure?

This has been an thought of mine in the last few days… why does it always seem like we make a choice in either focusing our efforts on either ‘preventing’ something from happening or working on the ‘cure’ of it however temporary.

A classic example would be having vaccinations or waiting till you got a bug and taking medicines to ‘treat’ it. Do you pit yourself subject to numerous jabs by needles in order to give yourself the best possible chance against some pathogens you may or may not encounter?

Would your answer be easier if there is ‘no’ cure to a illness?

Straying to another prevention vs cure type scenario.. would be the cosmetic industry.. I see there are some companies that focus on solely on skin care.. moisturisers, toners, cleansing foams, eye creams, face masks… etc.. then there are other companies hat purely do make up..eyeshadow, blush, lipsticks.. you get my drift right? So, if you are the preventative type person.. you would focus a great of your money, time, and energy on making your skin as healthy as possible .. and so you may not need make up because your skin is so ‘naturally’ good.

On the other hand, maybe you are not a patient person.. not one that follows a strict thorough skin care routine.. they only put on makeup when they are outside anyways.. they rather not waste time on a long and tedious skin care routine… thy instead focus heavily on make up.. which can turn a pimply, acne-prone, dry skinned etc skin into a beautiful model perhaps from a magazine… you can barely recognise them without make up. They are just that good at make up..however , when the make up is gone.. they actually have terrible skins..

The last example I will give is.. about the decisions we make in life.. our openness towards letting other come into our lives. Have we had our trust broken before? Are we afraid to love or to let others love us? Are we always afraid that they will leave us or worse.. hurt us in a way that we feel we truly never heal…?

Or do we recklessly let people in, with the hopes that this person will be different and that they wont hurt us..? When they do, we get ‘treatment’.. which could be in all different forms… maybe its bingeing on food, random sex, drugs, alcohol, or just letting yourself be depressed for awhile and hoping you will get better.

How about you? Are you a preventative or a treatment prone person? Which had the better life?

Work Vs Leisure

Sooo I tried for the first time the Lime-S Scooters that are on almost every corner of the city centre…for those who might not know how they look like..it looks like this:

lime-scooter-lineup-3-1220x813.jpg

These some what stylish scooters have been seen everywhere….in the streets, on the road, on the floor… Finally I got sick of seeing everyone riding them…my curiosity got the better of me and I downloaded the Lime App and signed myself up!! I was going to see what the big fuss was all about…I mean I used to have a (cheap and low quality) scooters as a kid…what was so special about this bigger, better, and green scooter?

Anyways,  after about 10 minutes of trying to get it to work…it finally worked…and off I went..sorta…I struggled for a long time trying to tighten the helmet…in the end I gave up …left it loose and just hoped it won’t fall off while riding the scooter..

These scooters differ from the cheap scooter I had as a kid…because its an ELECTRIC scooter!! But to be very honest…It was scary pressing the accelerator for the scooter…so I just pushed with my foot because…

  1. There was too many people on the pavement (it IS in the city)
  2. The pathways are not flat…but bumpy… 😦 and I almost fell off.
  3. It’s not smooth…it would jerk forward suddenly

Anyways…. It’s fun. and probably worth the $5 I spent on it for 10 minute joyride…

But it got me thinking….people enjoy using these scooters for fun, as well as transport…but what about our normal modes of transportation?

^My Toyota Yaris:

But then why do I find it a chore to drive a car to work and to places? I don’t seem to have the same joy I did when writing that Lime scooter. There was no thrill or excitement as I drove past the streets of Adelaide. I am not paying for this experience of driving…but isn’t it funny how we pay money to pretend to drive in driving games…or play games where we are impersonating real life..like running a farm or a restaurant LOL..funny.

Then I thought to myself, why don’t I pretend I am doing this for fun! Let’s pretend this is a game…a game where you get to drive and navigate through the streets of Adelaide…Then I drove down some underpass bridge thing and thought..this is actually a really cool game.

So what do you think about treating like a game? Makes it a bit more enjoyable maybe? =S

The Retrospective Perspective

Scenario One:

Ever saw an expensive nice business type of shirt and think to yourself…oh man…its so expensive..but it fits so well..and it looks so good. Let’s say this shirt costed $100. You buy the shirt. You love the shirt. In a year you wear it 100 times-its on your work clothes ? rotation cycle. So it essentially costed you $1 each time you wore it. It was worth it right? Since you wore it so many times.

Scenario Two:

You see a shirt that is on sale…its a casual shirt…its the last one on the clearance rack..you try it on..its a bit tight..but hey its only $10!! You buy the shirt.. you never wear it..because when you put it on again at home..you thought your stomach was too big… In a year you never wore it once. This cost you $10 and it was a waste of money.

Investments are so important, aren’t they? Anything of good quality and worth..unfortunately takes more money and time to acquire than the average cheap, low quality junk you can obtain easily…That is unless you got a really really good bargain/deal from a second hand shop or some super silly sale…

But yes, these days when I go shopping.. I am a bit more careful at what I decide to buy. I have decided that there is no point buying all these cheap clothes..for the sake of buying it because its cheap! I usually end up wearing it once …or it breaks/stains easily or it is easily worn out..due to the low quality. But, I have found …with the expensive items of clothing that I have invested in…I have used them so much…that I believe it was worth every dollar that I spent on it…especially those work clothes…! The great thing about formal clothes is that I can still wear them to church on Sundays and when going out…but those casual cheap clothes? I can’t wear them out unless I have a day off.. (which is soo rare for me) or if I am at home 😦 (where I am usually in my pjs anyways)…

So have a think, the next time you purchase something…is it worth it? Should I get 10 low quality items that I will never use/or have to replace coz it broke or should I invest that money and get a longer lasting and more quality product?

Worth a giving it a thought…

Kid vs Adult mindsets

I’ve been reflecting upon the difference in thinking of when I was child and in comparison to now (I was about to say when I was an adult…–..–“)

I am going to put my thoughts on what a kid Joy might have thought and what an adult Joy might think.

On finding their ideal partner:

KID : I want to fall in love with a tall, handsome, rich blonde eye blue eye man with a six pack. He will also have a golden retriever and possibly be a prince.

ADULT: I just want to find someone who will accept me for who I am and how I look and act. That accepts the way I look like slob that I am at home and when I have no make up on…

On Beauty:

KID : I wanna look like an adult…I wanna make my skin super white and cover up every blemish..! I wanna do eyeliner to make me look older…fake lashes..permed hair and red lipstick..high heels…

ADULT: OH GAWD I need to buy this expensive as MAC primer, blue and BB cream to make my face look like it has no make up…! Actually, stuff this…rather just be insecure about myself, how about I just learn to love and accept myself for who I am and stop wanting an ideal version of me that I will never assatain?

On Fast FOOD:

KID : Mum said I can have Maccas if I don’t cry when I get my flu vaccination! I can’t wait..it’s sooo rare we get maccas! I am so excited. Filet-o-fish here we come!!

ADULT: OH GAWD this is the 3rd time I’ve been to maccas this week..! #$#$ I wish I had time to eat better food..?!?! Why does maccas have to be the closest restaurant to work?!?! Time to diet T_T

On Doggos:

KID : OMG I WANT A DOG PLZ CAN I HAVE A DOG PLZ . I promise to take it on walks everyday and pick up all its sheet!

ADULT: OMG I want a dog. BUT I don’t have the time to look after the dog at the moment. I want to be a responsible dog owner. T_T

On cars:

KID : I CAN’T WAIT TILL I TURN 16 and get my Ls! OMG I can finally drive! I am going to go out everyday and party! Finally I will be come a social butterfly and be the most popular girl in my friendship group! I am going to pick up all my friends in my mums car..ohohoho

ADULT: FML . I don’t wanna drive in this #$#$ heavy peak hour traffic. SIGH why didn’t I catch a bus? Why can’t someone drive me? Why do I have to pick up ______ again? DAMMIT this car… OH SHEET petrol is so expensive again..FML this car is so expensive to maintain…OH WAIT rego is due again..there goes another $760…and oh no service next month..$400++ oh sigh. Why is it so expensive to keep a car? I rather a dog instead. lols. woof.

On shopping:

KID : NOOooo I don’t wanna go shopping with you mum its soo boring…@@

ADULT: Oh gawd…I can’t stop buying things on eBay.com and amazon…HOW DID I SPEND SO MUCH MONEY?!?!?!

On SLEEP:

KID : NOoooooo I don’t wanna sleep! Its only 9pm!!!!!!! I wanna stay up and read my book…I wanna talk with my friends..I wanna…eat….

ADULT: I am so sleep deprived. I just want a day to do nothing but sleep.
FML I only get 5 hours of sleep if I sleep straight away..! SIGH why do I have to get up so early for work everyday. I am so tired…all the time..I am addicted to caffeine.

and last but not least…

On Work/dreams:

KID : I can’t WAIT TO GET A JOB and earn money! Then I won’t have to rely on the merger amount of money that I get free from my parents! I CAN’T WAIT TO BECOME AN ADULT…

ADULT: FML . I wanna quit my job. it’s too stressful, it wasn’t what I imagined it would be, the other staff are bullies, the pay sucks, the patients suck, my hours suck, my life sucks. I am depressed. OH GOD I NEED A HOLIDAY. STAT. Why does working life suck so much? Why does being an adult suck so much …can I be a kid again?

OH lol this isn’t all true! Just for lols…hahah I was just thinking…about how much we change huh? If we think about who we used to be as kids and who we are now, would we tell ourselves? It’s like we are two completely different people that have existed.

Is there anything that you’ve noticed that has changed in your perception of life from when you were a kid and has changed now that you are an adult? If you want to, please leave your comments on those things below!

Take care,

Joy to the World~
